Why Squishy Toys Are the Impulse Buy of Christmas 2026
Every Christmas has one category that sells itself from a bowl next to the register. In 2026 that category is squishy toys — and the numbers behind it are not a social-media rumour. According to Circana’s mid-year report, squishy toys delivered triple-digit growth in 2026 through April, in both dollars and units. The wider US toy industry grew 13% in dollars over the same period, against a backdrop of softer spending in almost every other discretionary category.
For a retail buyer, that combination is unusual. Toys are outperforming while shoppers are cutting back elsewhere, and inside toys, the squishy and sensory segment is running far ahead of the category average. If you sell at a counter, a till point, or a gift display, this is the easiest incremental revenue available to you this Christmas.
Why the trend is real and not a spike
Squishy toys have three structural advantages that most viral products lack.
The first is price. A mochi squishy retails at $5.99 to $7.99. That sits below the threshold where a shopper stops to think — it is the kind of decision a shopper makes without weighing it up. Impulse categories live or die on that number, and squishies are priced squarely inside it.
The second is discovery. TikTok Shop now represents roughly 1% of total US retail sales and 3% of e-commerce, with toys, hobbies and collectibles ranking as the platform’s third-largest category. Squishy unboxing and desk-fidget content routinely clears a million views. That means demand arrives at your door pre-built: customers walk in already knowing what a mochi squishy or a stress keyboard is, and they are looking for one.
The third is repeat purchase. Squishies are collected, not bought once. Blind-box and mystery formats have been particularly effective at converting a single purchase into a habit, which is why the same customer comes back through December rather than buying one item in November and disappearing.
The Christmas maths for a retailer
Impulse categories are judged on two things: gross margin per unit and units per transaction. Squishies do well on both.
At our 20-box minimum order, mochi squishies land at $3.30 a piece and carry a suggested retail of $5.99 to $7.99. That is a 45% to 59% margin to the retailer. Decompression keyboards come in at $5.80 against a $9.99 to $14.99 shelf price, which is 42% to 61%. Bath bomb gift sets — a strong Christmas performer because they read as a gift rather than a toy — sit at $5.40 against $9.99 to $14.99.
| Category | Your cost/pc | Typical US shelf | Your margin |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mochi squishies | $3.30 | $5.99 – $7.99 | 45 – 59% |
| Animal & character mochi | $3.55 | $5.99 – $7.99 | 41 – 56% |
| Decompression keyboards | $5.80 | $9.99 – $14.99 | 42 – 61% |
| 26-key stress boards | $7.20 | $12.99 – $19.99 | 45 – 64% |
| Bath bomb gift sets | $5.40 | $9.99 – $14.99 | 46 – 64% |
Those margins hold at the minimum order. They improve by 6% at 50 boxes and 12% at 100 boxes, so a buyer stocking several stores or committing to the full season is landing product materially cheaper again.
Why they work at the counter specifically
Squishies ship in retail-ready display boxes of twelve. The box is the merchandising — it goes straight onto the counter without a planogram, a fixture, or staff time. For a small store that is the difference between a category you can trial this week and one that waits for a store reset that never happens.
They also solve the Christmas stocking-filler problem better than almost anything else at the price. A shopper who has already settled on a main gift is an easy add-on sale at $6, particularly when the add-on is visibly the thing their kid has been watching on a phone for months. The attach rate is what makes the category worth the counter space, not the standalone sale.
And unlike seasonal stock, squishies do not become worthless on December 26th. Anything unsold rolls into January without a markdown, which removes most of the downside risk that makes buyers cautious about a new category in Q4.
What to stock for Christmas
The mistake most first-time buyers make is going deep on one line. A single bestselling SKU looks efficient but it gives you one guess at what your particular customers want, and squishy preferences vary enormously by store type and neighbourhood.
A better approach is to spread the minimum order across five or six categories and let the first three weeks tell you where the demand is. Our minimum is 20 display boxes and you can mix them freely across the full range — so a realistic first Christmas order might be four boxes of mochi, four of animal and character mochi, three of dumpling and bao, three of ice cube, three of decompression keyboards and three of bath bomb gift sets. That is roughly 240 pieces across six categories, and it tells you more in a month than any amount of trend research.
Then reorder the winners deep. By late November you will know which two categories are carrying the display, and that is the point to move up a price tier on those specific lines.
The timing problem
The constraint on Christmas is not demand, it is the calendar. Stock ordered in late October is arriving during the weeks that matter. Stock ordered in late November is arriving for a season that is already over, and it sits in the back room until spring.
If you are considering the category at all, the decision is worth making in the next few weeks rather than the next few months. Search interest in squishies peaked in April 2026, which tells you the underlying demand is not seasonal — but the retail opportunity absolutely is.
